| The Tote Board and Singapore Pools donated $1.357million to President's Challenge 2008. Mr Bernard Chen, Chairman of Singapore Pools, presented the cheque to His Excellency, Mr S R Nathan, during the 'live' President's Star Charity 2008 Show on 12 October 2008. The President's Challenge is an annual series of community-based activities initiated by President S R Nathan in 2000. President's Challenge aims to increase awareness about how the community can get involved in helping the less fortunate and to raise funds for the social service sector. Apart from the annual donation of $1.2million, this year Singapore Pools' Staff Community Programme, i-SHINE (Serving from the Heart and In Nurturing Everyone), organised and raised over $157,000 through several fund-raising initiatives, such as encouraging major lottery winners to donate some of their winnings to President's Challenge; selling hongbaos at all Singapore Pools' retail outlets and selected community events; and sales of drinks and floating lilies at FunTasia, the Tote Board family's anniversary carnival held at the Singapore Chinese Garden. Since the debut of President's Challenge in 2000, Tote Board and Singapore Pools have donated generously to beneficiaries under President's Challenge and have helped to defray all administrative costs incurred to ensure every dollar raised goes directly to the needy and less fortunate members in the community.
