Singapore National Olympic Council Confers On Tote Board The 2011 IOC Trophy – Sport And Social Responsbility

Looking on was Mr Ng Ser Miang, Vice-President of International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).

The Tote Board was the recipient of the 2011 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Trophy – “Sport and Social Responsibility”. Mr. Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Co-ordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) presented the IOC Trophy to Mr. Bobby Chin, Chairman of Tote Board at the launch of the 2012 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League Season, which was held at Livewire (Marina Bay Sands) on Thursday, 26 January 2012.

The IOC trophy is given to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) to honour a prominent figure or organisation within the sporting community. Since 1985, IOC has presented the annual Trophy with a different theme each year to recognise individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions to sports in their respective countries.

The promotion of social development programmes was one of IOC’s objectives for 2011.  Hence, the 2011 IOC trophy was entitled “Sport and Social Responsibility” and awarded to a deserving individual or organisation responsible, in working, through sports; to improve, develop and advance social issues. Past organisations that have received the IOC Trophy include the Ministry of Education, Singapore and NTUC Income Insurance Cooperative.

Tote Board and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Singapore Pools have contributed immensely to the development of sports, building of sporting infrastructure and the funding of sports programmes. Both organisations consistently work towards the aim of enabling sports to be one of the most important tools for community bonding and a cornerstone of social cohesion in Singapore.

“Tote Board is presented with the Trophy in view of its holistic contribution to sport and the community, which has drawn both local and international recognition and praise.” – Chris Chan, Secretary General, SNOC.

“We are honoured to receive the 2011 IOC Trophy”, says Mr. Chin. “Tote Board is fully committed towards continued development of sports to build strong community bonds in Singapore. We thank both IOC and SNOC for conferring upon us this prestigious accolade.”

Some of the major sports programmes funded by Tote Board and Singapore Pools include contributions to the Sporting Singapore Fund for its visions to foster a Sporting Culture, Sporting Excellence and Sporting Industry in Singapore and sponsoring the S.League. Both organisations have also funded sports infrastructural projects such as the building of the new National Stadium and the Singapore Indoor Stadium. In addition, the organisations have supported Singapore contingents’ participation in international events such as the South East Asian, Commonwealth, Asian and the Olympic Games and the World Netball Championships 2011.

In 1993, Tote Board, together with Singapore Pools, became the primary sponsors of the Multi-Million Dollar Awards Programme (MAP). Devised by SNOC, the incentive scheme rewards medal-winning athletes who win medals at the Olympics, Asian, Commonwealth and South East Asian Games.
