In support of
ComChest’s maiden effort for a carbon neutral charity walk, Singapore Pools
supported last Sunday’s Heartstrings Walk at Marina Bay Sands with 20 water
dispensers at various waterpoints.
Participants at
ComChest’s annual Walk were pleasantly surprised to see water dispensers at the
designated spots, instead of the ubiquitous plastic bottled water, a common
sight at most mass events.
Singapore Pools’
green efforts - #UseLessPlastic - were echoed by those present. Said Kim Chin,
a homemaker, “I try to bring my own bag and rely less on plastic bags given out
at supermarkets.” She also encourages her son, Shawn Chin, a Primary 6 student,
to bring his own water bottle to school instead of buying off the shelves.
About 15
Singapore Pools staff volunteered to help at the water points, with participants
encouraged to “drink up” at water dispensers provided or get their refills
done. The Go Green move helped to eliminate over 8000 plastic bottles which
would otherwise had been distributed at the Walk. Maxi Lim of Boys to Men fame,
was also present to heighten awareness on the need to reduce reliance on
single-use plastics and shared useful green tips of his own experiences.
The event
raised more than $2.57 million for over 200 Social Service Organisations
supported by the Community Chest. More than 8000 participants joined this
year’s charity walk with Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, Speaker of
Parliament Tan Chuan- Jin and Minister for Social and Family Development and
Second Minister for National Development, Desmond Lee, gracing the event.
Singapore Pools
has been a valued community partner and sponsor of the ComChest Heartstrings
Walk since 2008.
